The upper formative phase (circa 800/600 BC to AD 400) in the south central highlands surrounding lake Titicaca spans over 1000 years in some locations. This period witnessed the creation of a series of rituaklly specialized and intensive agricultural-herding polities. Some consider this a time of social stratification with regional yet autonomous long lived centers.
