Considerations of markets in Precolumbian Mexico have failed to analyze the signifcance of periodicity for precolumbian market systems. This essay examines periodicity and argues that the several types of recorded precolumbian markets are qualitatively different: the 5 day market was basic, while and day markets were ritual in nature, tied to specific and infrequent days, and played little or no part in market articualtion.
