| Resumen, etc. | Hasta 1811 en que naciera el Paraguay como república independiente y ubicada en la margen oriental del río del mismo nombre, los distintos títulos coloniales le otorgan a la Real Audiencia de Charcas - la futura Bolivia - su propiedad indiscutible del territorio del Chaco Boreal. Los distintos gobiernos paraguayos, al no poder oponérseles con otros fehacientemente claros y definitorios, fueron ocupándolos sostenidamente hasta recurrir a la guerra, seguros de contar con el amplio apoyo militar, financiero y diplomático que le prestó el gobierno argentino. En plena guerra, su ambición territorial respaldada en una premisa jurídica colonial y alentada por la república vecina aliada, no se contuvo y añadió como suya una enorme franja hasta colindar con el Departamento del Beni. Como en toda guerra, también en la del Chaco confluyeron intereses mancomunados, cada uno aguardando apoderarse de una gran tajada territorial sembrada de petróleo. La guerra tuvo dos fases: la campaña militar y la campaña diplomática, en total 6 años, que nos hacen concluir que Bolivia enfrentó simultánea y concurrentemente a cinco enemigos en el siguiente grado de importancia: el clima insalubre que diezmó al ejército boliviano; la república Argentina que mantuvo logísticamente al ejército paraguayo, le asesoró en la planificación de sus operaciones y contribuyó con ciudadanos argentinos como combatientes; la empresa petrolera Standard Oil que dotó de combustible y aceites de origen boliviano, a la marina, aviación y ejército guaraníes; la república del Paraguay militarmente mantenida artificialmente por su aliada y diezmada por su oponente a su mínima expresión de 12.500 combatientes, por último, el gobierno de Chile que esperaba que el territorio boliviano fuese repartido entre sus vecinos y por extensión, desaparecido como Estado. |
