La leyenda de Tunupa fluye desde épocas lejanas en los Andes. Lo que interesa para el estudio no solamente es señalar cuáles eran las creencias y el ambiente simbólico en aquellos tiempos, sino analizar las ideas fundamentales del recorrido en el territorio andino, cuando Tunupa reorganiza estos espacios geográficos; así se pretende visibilizar pensamientos base en Tunupa a través de una metodología etnográfica y bibliográfica relativa al tema, con el objetivo de reflexionar sobre las referencias lógicas de Tunupa y relacionarlas al imaginario andino. El espacio geográfico en donde se desenvuelve la leyenda de Tunupa es el lago Titicaca, sus circundantes al río Desaguadero y al lago Poopó o la cuenca de Aullagas; actualmente, aún en estos territorios se cuenta la trayectoria simbólica del héroe andino, por ejemplo en la provincia Pacajes (departamento de La Paz). Existe la creencia de que Tunupa fue un ser humano, un caminante que sembró peces para que sobreviva la gente de las orillas del río Desaguadero, los lagos Titicaca y Poopó; los peces aún continúan siendo sustento alimenticio de los urus, hiruitos o muratos y otras culturas.
