El Archivo de La Paz, creado en 1971, posee un fondo de más de 100.000 fotografías digitalizadas para el servicio de consulta del público en general. Estos recursos documentales han sustentado tesis en historia, antropología y demás ciencias sociales. Dentro de este fondo, los fotógrafos de la última década del siglo XIX y las primeras del XX, han jugado un rol fundamental para conocer la estructura económica, política, social y cultural del departamento y de la ciudad de La Paz. Este patrimonio de la memoria histórica, visual del pasado y remembranza viva en el presente, fue una consecuencia de la introducción de las primeras máquinas fotográficas a la ciudad La Paz a fines del siglo XIX. Las fotografías son útiles para la investigación histórica y otras ciencias sociales; porque, a partir de ellas, las imágenes captadas permiten la reconstrucción de la historia de los pueblos, complementa la información proporcionada por la documentación escrita, que solamente narra o describe hechos y acontecimientos. Mientras las fotografías al ser captadas en el instante se constituyen en pruebas fehacientes de lo ocurrido dentro de una sociedad. De ahí que las imágenes, a pesar del tiempo, dan testimonio visual, que llevan al observador del presente hacia el pasado.

The Archivo de La Paz, created in 1971, has collected more than 100,000 photographs digitized for the public service. These documentary resources have sustained thesis in history, anthropology and other social sciences. Within this background, photographers of the last decade of the 19th century and the first of the 20th, have played a fundamental role for the economic, political, social and cultural structure of the Department and the city of La Paz. This heritage of historical, visual memory of the past and remembrance alive in the present, was a consequence of the introduction of the first cameras to the La Paz city, at the end of the 19th century. The photographs are useful for historical research and other social sciences; because, from them, the captured images allow the reconstruction of the history of peoples, it complements the information provided by written documents, that only tells or describes facts and events. Meanwhile, the photographs to be captured at the moment are evidence of what happened within a society. That is why the images, despite the weather, give visual testimony, leading to the observer for the present to the past.
